Village Denied Victory in Blackpool
15 June 2010
Village narrowly lost out on their third successive GFSN tournament victory after losing a controversial penalty shoot-out in the final of the Blackpool tournament against London Titans.
by Pete Ransom
Having deposed of the other VMFC side in the semi-final, Village had the better of a 1-1 draw in the final before James Williams had his penalty deemed as saved despite the ball spinning into the back of the net off the keeper's hands.
It was rough justice for a side that had a very successful tournament, including a 4-0 victory in the closing group stage game. Having come through a penalty shoot-out in the quarter final, the two Village teams met in a tough semi-final that saw Williams inflict the only goal that the other VMFC conceded in the whole tournament.
Despite the defeat, an enjoyable time was spent at the seaside resort by all involved, even if Dave Sedgwick was the only one happy with England's 1-1 draw with the USA later that night.
Village will look to resume GFSN tournament duties at Leicester in September.
