28 August 2014
The club had a busy August as they faced a number of teams during their warm-up to the 2014/2015 season. Village faced AFC Gorton, Duffys FC, Trafford Mersey, Chorlton FC and Merseyside Marauders in friendlies as well as taking on Trowbridge Tigers in a cup game.
First up we faced AFC Gorton at Cedar Mount Academy. The game was arranged at very short notice but with players eager to get back to football, manager Connell was able to pick a strong squad of 15 players. And Village started well as they put together some great passing moves but their lack of any action for a month or two soon told as AFC Gorton went in at half time 3-1 up – Rodriguez scoring for Village. The game ended 4-1 but there were positives to take in that there was some great play and understanding at such an early time in the season and Connell’s fitness regime already started to pay dividends as the team did not suffer their usual second half slump.
Village then made the long journey down to Wiltshire to take on Trowbridge Tigers in the preliminary round of the GFSN Cup. A determined and solid performance saw the men from the north west earn a 2-1 victory - thanks to goals from Holmes and Nelson – and a place in the round of 16.
Albert Park was the venue for a 3-0 loss to Duffys FC as well as a 3-0 win against Chorlton FC as the club started to ramp up the preparations for the season. A heavy 8-0 loss against a very strong and impressive Trafford Mersey FC showed that Village still had a bit of work to do but a 4-0 victory over local rivals Mersey Marauders in the inaugural Pride Cup has set the team up well for the season ahead.
Village will be in regular action in the months ahead and we would encourage supporters to come down and cheer us on as we look to have a successful season.
